Thank you to all who came and Director Mazzocchi for answering our burning questions?
Missed the meeting or forgot an answer to a question? Watch the video or read the notes below.
- How safe will we be? There are commuter and residential students coming in and out from everywhere. Health and safety of everyone matters. Limit activities indoors and keep as many rehearsals as possible outside. “Safer than going to the grocery store if all Cali community members follow through on the plans.” This includes masking, washing hands, etc. We did everything we could by implementing safety regulations.
- I’m behind on ensemble credits at the moment. If COVID restrictions continue into next semester and the future, what do you think the ensemble situations will look like? I’m worried I won’t be able to get these credits soon enough. Under these circumstances, you will not be prevented from attaining the credit regarding ensembles. They are still functioning in person this semester with of course, a few changes.
- My deadline for my recital is October 15th. I’m looking to perform at the end of September. The reason I moved it from last Spring was COVID. Will I be able to do that in Leshowitz and in person this fall semester? Recital policy attached yesterday. The student, accompanist, and instructor will only be allowed in the recital hall. Recitals will be live streamed or prerecorded. For chamber groups at recitals, you cannot have more than a quintet on stage.
- What is the protocol for recitals this semester? In-person? Online? All of the information given via email to juniors and seniors. CaliLive page where people can watch pre recorded and live stream concerts.
- I will not be able to take either combo nor big band this semester because of the current situation in my country. What can I do in order to not have to attend an extra semester for just those 2 classes? Not being able to participate in ensembles should not hold you back from graduating. Please talk to your academic advisor and we will work this out.
- What job opportunities are there for a vocal performance major? Stay tuned for on campus opportunities. Montclair is happy to hire you!!
- How will practice rooms work this semester? Use the single space in the residence hall if a resident. Practice rooms are open on the fourth floor for now. Third floor after. Each floor has disinfectant spray, cloths, and approved wipes for pianos. All users must disinfect whatever you touch with the supplies. Faculty will monitor these protocols. Wait for at least 30 min before using the practice room next.
- What are the safety precautions and guidelines? Sanitation supplies are in practice rooms for students to use before and after use. No more than one person in a practice room. It is very unsafe and unwise to share.
- Will the Russ practice rooms be accessible to students this semester? No. Administration is not satisfied with the ventilation system. Card in at your own risk. However, it is not a good idea.
- What is the reservation policy? First come first serve. See how it goes and be patient. Capacity will be monitored closely
- What is changing? What resources are allowed? Additional details on the Cali Restart FAQ page
- Students often teach lessons on the side. Will they be able to do so and use Cali practice rooms? NO! Do not want anyone on campus who is normally not on it.
- How will ensembles work? Students should have been contacted by their ensemble director (Buchanan, McCauley, DeMaisson, etc.) Students will be masked when not playing, social distancing, etc.

- Rehearsals no longer than 40 minutes to limit exposure to one another
- Mask when not playing. Everyone will be 15 feet apart.
- Will wind instruments require bell coverings for practice rooms, rehearsals, performances, etc.? Yes, these things are required. Please refer to the Cali restart FAQ for what is specifically applied to you and your instrument.
- How will attendance work in a Hawk Mix situation? Depends on the instructor and how they go about this modality. For safety, it will most likely be online.
- How will lessons operate? Larger rooms like G01 will be used. Teacher and student will be on opposite sides of the room at least 15 feet apart. When not playing, both teacher and student are wearing masks. Additional details are on the Cali Restart FAQ page.
- Will they be online for commuter students? All lessons are in person unless decided mutually by the teacher and the student. If you want lessons to be online, please talk to your lesson teacher and instrument coordinator (woodwind, brass, strings, voice, etc.)
- Will there be performances for ensembles? Mix of large ensemble and chamber music recorded and broadcasted on the CaliLive page on the website.
- Same amount of performances as previous semesters? Try to keep at least the same amount of opportunities or more. In regards to student recitals, Wednesdays at 1:30, recordings will be streamed as a part of our “Midweek Series.”
- When a class is labeled Hawk Mix and do not feel comfortable coming to campus, can we opt to take the class online? Of course, please keep open communication with your professor.
- What is the Face to Face capacity for a HawkMix class? There will be a sign on every door regarding the occupancy for each room. Your instructor for the class will reach out to you regarding how the class will be structured with this modality.
- How will keyboard classes be held? Keyboard classes are online
- Will the keyboard lab be open to students? The lab will be open. Students are responsible for wiping down keys before and after use. Daily housekeeping for sanitation.
- How will juries operate this semester? Are we still having them? Yes juries are still happening. Via recording or live playing through zoom. A subject area that all instrument coordinators know a lot about (woodwinds, brass, voice, strings, etc)
- By the first week of class, is it okay if I do not have the book for class right away due to money reasons? Do what you can. Of course the goal is to have books on time. Reach out to your professors regarding financial concerns and the resources for the class.
- As a commuter student who comes to campus two days a week for one class, what is the best parking option? Not likely to run into parking issues! YAY!
- I can’t conduct my zoom voice lessons in my dorm as I would get noise complaints from residence life, will Chapin practice rooms be reserved for lesson times by faculty as in previous years? Yes. Faculty member can reserve the room for the student
- Are we able to host in-person events at Cali? No for now to ensure everyone’s safety and limit exposure.
- How are lockers being handled? Lindsay Setzer, the school assistant, handles it. Students should have received an email regarding whether they are keeping their lockers from the previous academic year
