Active Membership: Open to individuals engaged in music teaching or other music-related educational work. Each active member has the right to vote and hold office and receives a subscription to Music Educators Journal and Teaching Music. All active members hold concurrent membership in their respective federated state association of NAfME. Introductory and life members are also considered active members and have the same privileges. Introductory membership is offered at a reduced rate for one year and is open to individuals who have been Collegiate members during the preceding fiscal year. Life membership is 3000% of the current national dues.

Collegiate Membership: Open to music students at the college or university level who are not employed full-time as teachers. Collegiate chapter members have the same privileges as active members except the right to vote or hold elective office.

Retired Membership: Open to former music educators who have retired from teaching or other music-related educational work. Retired members have the same privileges as active members except the right to hold elective office.

Corporate Membership: Open to companies that supply music education products and services. Member benefits may include discounts on exhibits at NAfME events, discounts on advertising in NAfME journals, company listing on the NAfME Web site and one issue of an NAfME journal, the opportunity to sponsor electronic communications, such as the weekly member news update, and a subscription to Music Educators Journal and Teaching Music.


NAfME was founded in 1907 when 104 music supervisors from school districts in 16 states answered an invitation to take part in a special conference for school music supervisors in Keokuk, Iowa. Among the world’s largest arts education organizations, NAfME is the only association that addresses all aspects of music education. Through membership of more than 75,000 active, retired, and pre-service music teachers, and with 60,000 honor students and supporters, NAfME serves millions of students nationwide through activities at all teaching levels, from preschool to graduate school.

Through its many programs, activities, publications, and conferences, NAfME addresses all aspects of music education and works to ensure that every student shall have access and exposure to a balanced, comprehensive, and high-quality program of music instruction. By promoting the best possible music education for all children and advancing music education as a profession, NAfME seeks to advance music education by encouraging the making and study of music by all. NAfME has four major goals:

  • Every student in our nation’s schools shall study music as part of the core curriculum.
  • All school music programs shall be balanced, comprehensive, and sequential, as defined in the National Standards for Music Education and shall be provided with resources as defined in the Opportunity-to-Learn Standards for Music.
  • All music instruction shall be delivered by well-prepared professional music educators, each of whom meets state requirements.
  • Music educators and those who support music education shall view NAfME as the primary association for ensuring the widespread advancement of the profession.
